Rescue and Street Engagement

We begin where the youngsters are.

AKHIN Africa organizes street football tournaments, sports activities, and cultural events as trusted entry points to engage youngsters living on the streets. These activities create safe, non-threatening spaces where young people can learn about our rehabilitation program.

Participation is voluntary. Only those who demonstrate readiness and commitment to change are enrolled, ensuring ownership of the journey ahead.

Family Tracing and Community Reintegration

Whenever possible, we work toward safe family reunification.

In collaboration with Social Welfare Officers, we trace families and assess the conditions required for a child’s return. Where reunification is viable, AKHIN Africa provides targeted support to strengthen family relationships and economic stability.

This includes:
– Business training and livelihood support for single mothers
– Ongoing monitoring to ensure child safety
– Community-based reintegration support

The goal is not return at any cost, but return to dignity and stability.

When Home Is Unsafe

In cases where a child’s home is unsafe, abusive, or non-existent, returning them would place them at risk of street relapse.

In such situations, youngsters remain within AKHIN Africa’s care until:
– They achieve independence
– Conditions improve
– Better long-term opportunities become available

During this time, they enter our structured rehabilitation and learning pathway known as STREET.

Set the Stage (5 Days)

This is a time to pause and breathe. After life on the streets, participants are invited to rest, eat well, and feel safe, often for the first time in a long while. Through simple routines around hygiene and community living, they experience care, consistency, and belonging, with no pressure to perform

Therapy (3 Months)

This phase begins with medical and psychological assessments in the first week, followed by rehabilitation through sports, storytelling, theatre, and dance. Learning starts gently through visual exposure to nature and culture. Literacy, numeracy, and digital skills are introduced playfully so confidence can grow without fear.

Reclaiming the Time (3 Months)

This phase focuses on intensive literacy, numeracy, and digital learning through gamified exploration of culture, history, science, and technology. Along the way, reflective activities help them understand themselves better, building emotional awareness, confidence, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Expand Your Mind

This phase opens doors to the wider world. Participants travel, meet people who are doing inspiring things, and encounter new ideas and environments. Through social and environmental action such as planting and caring for trees, they learn responsibility and teamwork. They take turns planning daily activities, managing finances, and leading the group during the trip.

Empowerment (Variable Duration)

The focus now shifts to becoming a problem solver. Participants design their own learning through real projects, supported by catalysts who guide rather than instruct. Within the AKHIN Guild’s hands-on learning environment, they explore multiple disciplines, discover their strengths, and choose where to specialize with full support, including enrollment in school for those who so desire and are ready.

Try (Transition Phase, 18+)

In this phase, participants take their problem-solving skills into the real world by choosing to intern, start a business through the AKHIN revolving investment fund, seek employment, or pursue further studies. Mentorship and networks remain available, and if things do not work out the first time, participants are welcome to return, reflect, and prepare again.
